Profile
Lux et Umbra Architecture is a UK based architectural practice founded by RIBA chartered architect Carmina Ionescu in 2022.
Prior to Lux et Umbra Architecture Carmina Ionescu has designed many single- and multiple-occupancy residential projects both in the UK and elsewhere. Worked as a senior architect and associate at prestigious practices like JRA in London and WKK Architects - an international practice specialised in designing landmark buildings (towers) everywhere in the world. She has led a team of architects to deliver a £540m high-end multi-storey 68 + apartments and penthouses development in Holland Park, London. She worked on a high-rise, mixed use (residential & commercial) development in Limassol, Cyprus, consisting of a public plaza, podium and three towers, GFA: 120,000m2. She worked at the concept design stage on the ‘Curv’ Tower in Vancouver, a 60 storeys landmark tower - the first with Passiv House Classic Standard for performance, 485 residential units, 8 levels of underground parking and 3 mechanical levels.
She was a sole practitioner in Romania, where she was born and studied architecture. She lived for several years as an expat in Budapest and Vienna before settling in the UK. This experience taught her the benefits of understanding different cultures and ways of living and ignited her desire to create a better architectural environment in which we can all thrive.
Design approach: - the core of my design philosophy is based on the Vitruvian Triad of the ideal attributes of an architectural object:
firmitas - stability,
utilitas - utility,
venustas - beauty.
In addition to that an energy-efficient and sustainable approach makes a building suitable for the 21st century.
I like to use clear shapes that give a sense of order, unity and coherence between the envelope, the internal volume and the surroundings. I allow natural light to flood the interiors because it lifts people’s spirits, it effortlessly articulates spaces and surfaces.
l work on all sorts of building types and sizes from unique one-off homes to the cost-effective small extensions making the best possible outcome out of the site and the budget. Buildings that please the occupants whilst being considerate to the neighbours.
