House extension, remodelling and retrofitting / West Sussex

A detached chalet bungalow in need of modernisation through an energy-efficient design approach.

The proposed development consists in an infill of one and a half storey extension which will incorporate the existing garage to the West. On the front elevation the extension over the existing garage will tie in with the existing main house front line. A new gable end will be created at the first floor to the front elevation as a subservient replica of the existing, which will signal the new formed recessed main entrance facing the highway. The first floor extension will accommodate two new bedrooms each having its own en-suite bathroom under a fully new remodelled pitched roof which will keep the appearance of the original chalet roof pitch. New proposed full height gable windows with ‘Juliette’ balconies will bring an abundance of natural light into the space, creating a serene and warm ambience. The upper half storey will be cladded in shou sugi ban - charred timber to add character to the building whilst keeping it sustainable.
